You should be able to remove the current integration tools and replace them with the older one from your host. The VM is working. I don't have to make any changes there if I can perform the in-place upgrade to R I am sensing no way around this issue, so it looks like a complete wipe and reinstall.

Nice Microsoft It is a fresh install. If you know of an update that allows one to go from to R2 I would love a link to it because it'll save me rebuilding about 50 servers. I have a R2 key and license. I can't be the only one with this issue.

I have performed in place upgrades without issue before. This is the first time it has failed. Even Microsoft says it should work. The Windows Datacenter is the full licensed version. I now have a R2 licensed version that I wanted to perform the in place upgrade to avoid reinstalling management software. We gave up after trying to upgrade per Microsoft's instructions and will perform the full clean install of R2 Datacenter this afternoon.

Who knew a licensing terms issue would stop the process even before getting to enter the license key for the upgrade. Standard edition allows up to 2 virtual instances while the Datacenter edition allows unlimited number of virtual instances. For example, a Windows Server R2 Standard edition installed on a physical server with one socket CPU can support up to two instances of virtual machines.

These virtual machines can be Server R2 Standard or Essentials edition. Similarly, if you install a Windows Server R2 Datacenter edition , then you can install an unlimited number of virtual machines.

Scenario 2 : Install Server Standard Edition on a physical server with 1 physical processor, running 8 instances of virtual machines. A total of 50 users will be accessing the server.

Remember that a single Standard edition license covers up to two physical processors and up to two instances of virtual machines. Since the requirement is to run 8 instances of virtual machines, we need four Standard edition licenses. If we decided to use the Datacenter edition in this scenario, a single license with 50 CAL would be enough to cover our needs, because the Datacenter edition license supports an unlimited number of virtual instances and up to two physical processors.

Licensing Model. Unfortunately, this does not work for us. I have a Datacenter VM that I want to downgrade. Ok, I run setup. I have to enter a license key to continue. I enter the standard key, choose Windows Server Standard, continue and cannot choose to keep data. The same as Sebastian wrote. Got the solution. But I tried it once more with the general KMS key and changed it later, that worked.

You can google for the KMS Key. That key is normally used with a key management system, a special server in your network. Therefore, that key is always accepted when installing and is later checked for validity.

In our case, that key cannot be validated and so after reboot Windows is not activated. You can then provide a valid key and Windows gets activated. Hi there — thanks for your guide. Hi We were able to complete these steps successfully. Just struggling to activate windows now… we get the following error code: 0xB. Alternatively, i have tried to clear the key with CMD and input a legitimate key for Server Standard and getting the following error code: 0xCE Changing both keys — done.

Windows server 2012 r2 change from datacenter to standard free

My company setup a domain environment several months ago using Windows R2 Datacentre Evaluation, however whilst we've found a domain environment a lot better than a Workgroup environment we've not need to use any VMs and so the cost of Datacentre is un-necessary compared to Standard, however can Datacentre be downgraded to Standard? Microsoft indicates that this isn't possible, however if it's not it's going to be a real headache to do a clean install.

Is there a way? Sadly, there is no way to downgrade. But a simple way to help the change is to setup a second domain controller and decommission that server. That way your not recreating everything! Could try something like this?

This would have to be run from an elevated command prompt. I've used it to convert eval to standard and datacenter. Should work for Datacenter to Standard. If the server is a domain controller, you cannot convert it to a retail version.

In this case, install an additional domain controller on a server that runs a retail version and remove AD DS from the domain controller that runs on the evaluation version.

Make note of the edition ID, an abbreviated form of the edition name. The server will restart twice. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting.
